Add PhotosCarroll Cemetery is an African American cemetery associated with the ancestry/descendants of Richard Kendrick Posey and an enslaved woman names Lelita (AKA Lettie, Lottie or Letty )Diggs and the Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church. The cemetery was probably used in the early 1800's when African Americans were documented as slaves/labor servants living on the property through the early twentieth century with the last recorded burial occurring in 1943(?). At least 121 individuals are interred in the cemetery, although their identities are largely unknown. These individuals were located through an noninvasive archaeological survey and a later ground penetrating radar survey. Burial records were not maintained by the Carroll family as custodians of the cemetery. The church's burial records were lost in 1940, when the Mount Hope Baptist Church was destroyed by fire, and none of the surviving grave markers bear inscriptions. Research undertaken by the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites revealed the names of 22 individuals known to have been interred in Carroll Cemetery, as well as 16 individuals suspected to have been interred in the cemetery. Oral history is ongoing to identify other individuals buried in the cemetery. The cemetery is on private property.
