Father Dickson Cemetery was one of the first cemeteries available to Black people in the St Louis, MO area. It was established in 1903 as a final resting place for Blacks due to the segregation of cemeteries. The cemetery closed to new burials in the 1970s. It was not endowed to provide perpetual care, and it fell victim to vandalism, misuse and neglect. In the mid-1980s, the cemetery was threatened with commercial development. A group, Friends of Father Dickson Cemetery, was organized to protect and restore this historic cemetery. After decades of volunteer labor and financial support from the St Louis area, in October 2021, the cemetery was named to the National Register of Historic Places.
