According to local history outlined in the book "Lincoln Parish History", this cemetery was originally about 2 miles south of its current location and was moved when the nearby church was organized in the mid-19th century. Reportedly, a man named John Sanderson donated 5 acres of land towards the church and cemetery, though a deed recorded in 1859 shows 6 acres for Pleasant Grove Church and was signed by James P. Smith, Samuel Smith, and William McKenzie. The cemetery is now located near the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Within the burial grounds is a contrast of graves--there are expensive grave markers showing the prosperous nature of some of the original pioneer families; however, nearby are many unmarked or unidentified graves. As many other cemeteries in this region, burials here were segregated, and there is a area outside of the fenced portion that was originally set aside for burials of enslaved African-Americans and their descendants.
Large cemetery across from Pleasant Grove Church in Choudrant. Choudrant is a community with a school, not a town, so everything is rural. This cemetery is one of the oldest in Lincoln Parish and there is a number of unrecorded and unmarked graves that need to be researched.
