The first burial in what would become Greenwood Cemetery was Dempsey Overman's daughter in 1849. The Overmans eventually turned their family cemetery over to the City, and that land became the "original section" of Greenwood Cemetery. The cemetery eventually grew to include the Mullarky family cemetery (Greenwood's First Addition), the Wild family cemetery (Greenwood's Second Addition), and a Catholic cemetery that was first known as St. Bernard's and later St. Patrick's. Today, all of Greenwood Cemetery has been blessed and there is no longer a separate area for Catholic burials. Later additions to Greenwood include Oaklawn and Sunny Slope.
Other features of Greenwood Cemetery include a mausoleum, which was built in 1913, and a War Memorial, which was added in 1914 to commemorate the veterans who are buried in Greenwood. Most recently, a columbarium was added in 2024 to hold cremains.
