In 1873, residents of the new town of Sioux Falls, population 150, purchased twenty acres of land as a cemetery. Previously, burials had taken place at Fort Dakota and on the bluffs west of the town. By 1880, all of these burials had been re-interred, many at Mount Pleasant.
In the 1920s, several prominent families gifted money and land to the cemetery. A bequest from Josephine Glidden led to the 1924 construction of the Glidden Memorial Chapel near the entrance to the cemetery. Built of quartzite, the pink rock found in and near Sioux Falls, the Glidden Memorial Chapel includes both a small chapel and a basement vault that once held bodies awaiting burial after the ground thawed in the spring.
Mount Pleasant Cemetery includes the graves of approximately 180 Civil War veterans, many well known families from early Sioux Falls, orphans from the South Dakota Children's Home, and five members of the volunteer Cascade Hook and Ladder Company who died while fighting fires in Sioux Falls. There is also a "pauper's" section with unmarked graves. Currently, along with traditional burials, Mount Pleasant offers green burials, mausoleum niches, and a section to scatter cremains.
Mount Pleasant Cemetery currently sits on 52 acres of land east of downtown Sioux Falls. Volunteers have recently been working to maintain the building and grounds after the cemetery fell into disrepair.
