Born in Clermont County, Ohio. Graduated from Cleveland Medical College, 1854, coming back to live in Cleveland in 1856. George volunteered for Civil War army service in the 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 19, 1862 as Assistant Surgeon. He resigned May 28, 1863 because of "lung trouble". He and his wife had a daughter, Ida, born in 1865 but it is unknown what happened to her. His name is on Panel #13 in he Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, OH. Dr. Butler continued to practice medicine after the war, specializing in allopathy He never filed for an invalid pension and his widow never applied for a pension either. At the time of his death from rheumatic heart trouble, they lived at 160 Sawtell Ave., Cleveland, Ohio.
