Miss Blanche Stoutenburgh, 78, who founded the Fair Club in 1936 and who formerly served as Assistant Matron of the Vassar Home for Aged Men, died yesterday in Vassar Hospital. Miss Stoutenburgh, who had been ill the last five years, formerly made her home at 152 College Avenue.
Descended from Peter van Stoutenburgh, first Treasurer of New Amsterdam, now New York City, Miss Stoutenburgh also was a Descendant of Jacobus and Margaret Teller Stoutenburgh, early settlers in Hyde Park, formerly known as "Stoutenburgh".
Miss Stoutenburgh was born in Fairfax, Fairfax County, VA, June 12, 1876, the daughter of the late Walter Herrick and Sara Flint Hyatt Stoutenburgh.
She spent her early life in Washington, D.C. and for some time had a government position there. She came to Dutchess County in the early 1900s and with her father resided on a South Road farm, present site of Wendover Farms.
Subsequently, Miss Stoutenburgh went to Woodstock, CT to make her home. She later was employed by the League of Women Voters in Nebraska and returned to this city only a brief time prior to becoming Assistant Matron of the Vassar home in 1935. She continued to serve there with Miss Ada B Willett, until they both retired in 1947.
Miss Stoutenburgh was a member of the First Congregational Church and of its Circle Seven. She also was a member of the Stoutenburgh-Teller Family Association, Inc.
