The inventory for John's father-in-law, William Potter stated he died 27 Nov 1684 and at the bottom of the inventory it listed legatees to William Potter's estate including, "John Meads children namly John: Joseph: Ebeneser: Jonathan: Benjamin: Nathanell: Samuel: Mead: Hana: Abigail: Elizabeth: Mary: allso David Mead:" showing John then had 12 living children. The 18 Sep 1684 will of his father-in-law, Wiliam Potter named John Mead as his son-in-law as the only relative named in the will. (See the memorial for the father-in-law for the image of that will)
