Born in King George County in Virginia, Joseph was the son of Samuel Humphries and Jemimah Humphries (the Humphries spelling changed over the years...). He was of English and Welsh descent. He relocated to Columbiana County Ohio in 1804 from Fairfax County, Virginia, where he married Mary Lodge on Sept. 10, 1810 in Elkrun Township. Joseph and Mary were Quakers. They moved from Elkrun Township between 1820 and 1830, and set up a homestead located just about 1 mile north of the crossroads later known as Adair, Ohio. Five sons (Samuel, Jonathan, Joseph, John, William) and four daughters (Elizabeth, Sophia, Sarah, Mary Ann 'Annie'). Some of his grandchildren (from his son William Humphreys) are buried nearby.Husband of Mary Lodge
