Lena Roberta Reed Finley
Lena Roberta Reed, the daughter of Albert James and Augusta (Beal) Reed Cox, was born on October 28, 1908, on a farm in the Dinas Community. Her father was one of the original homesteaders on the plains of Western Kansas.
When Roberta was Il years old, her father died, leaving a family of six, consisting of his wife Augusta and the five children, Roberta, Mattie, Guilbert, Delgar and Albert James, Jr.
Roberta graduated from a rural school, known as Red Top, District No. 9. After four more years, she became a graduate of the Wallace County Community High School with the Class of 1925. During her high school years and summer vacations, Roberta was employed in the Courthouse working as a typist or in other capacities.
In the fall of 1925, Roberta enrolled at Fort Hays Kansas State Teachers College and after two years she earned a teaching certificate. She taught for two years in the Sharon Springs Grade School.
On June 2, 1929, Roberta and Marshall Finley were married and for 32 years they lived on the farm four miles east of Sharon Springs. There, the couple raised their family of four children. They all enjoyed farm life. Marshall and Roberta moved to town in 1961 to take care of Roberta's parents, George and Augusta Cox. In 1979, the couple celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Roberta was active in the Methodist Women's Society and the couple enjoyed the activities at the Senior Center. Roberta's hobbies were her family and needlework, consisting of crocheting and quilting.
Those preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers Delgar and Albert James, Jr. and Step-father George Cox.l
