The only son he held is own with five sisters. He was a student and always reading and learning. He finished High School in Red Bluff and then went to a Trade School in San Francisco but ran out of money and returned home. He continued his education on his own through Correspondence School studying physics, chemistry and mathematics.

When 21 he went to Modoc County with his mother and sister Julia to be with the other sisters living there. He apprenticed to an
electrician and installed electricity to much of the town of Alturas.

After his father died John returned to the family ranch at Red Hill . He invented a gyro stabilizer to be used in airplanes and got a patent on it. Then he built a small airplane himself. It was well built but needed an engine more powerful than he could afford so it never flew. John also built a car from a kit and used it for many years.

He never liked his name and changed it to John Jay Lauer. He married Mildred Ehorn a music teacher who was 21 and he was 33. They had three children, Eugene John, Mary Ellen and Maudie Anna. John worked as a blacksmith for many years and then a carpenter. He built the family house in Red Bluff and then at age 70 the house at Red Hill. He never feared heights and would walk the house ridgepole and climb high in trees. He amused his children by walking on his hands. He loved gardening and grew fruit trees experimenting grafting. He also grew grapes, berries and flowers. John died of cancer at age 82.
