Enlisted as a Private in Captain J.J. Martin's Company for Beat No.2 in Lamar County (Co. K 9th, Maxey's Brigade of Texas Cavalry) in August 1861. Enlisted on 12 Sep 1861 at Camp Bartow and was attached to the 6th Regiment Texas Cavalry.

He is the younger cousin of Captain Thomas Henry Skidmore, CSA, AQM, 9th Texas Infantry.
