Elsia was a daughter of Dr. Jesse Temple and Betsey Ann (Hempstead) Hotchkiss who died when less than 2 years old. Family records show she died at Camp Franklin, Virginia. Camp Franklin was a tented Civil War camp set up in 1861-1862 to house a single regiment of around 1,000 soldiers. Its location has been traced to the Fort Williams area - near Alexandria, one of a chain of fortifications around Washington, D.C. Whether she was born in Virginia, or in New York is not known. Her father, Jesse Temple Hotchkiss, MD, was the youngest of the six sons and one daughter born to Amraphel and Apolina Hotchkiss. He was born in Windsor, NY in 1814 and in 1841 he married Betsey Ann Hempstead. Attending the Medical College of the University of Pennsylvania, he graduated in 1842 at the age of 28. He practiced in Windsor, NY as well as Cohocton (now known as Hancock), Delaware County NY and Orange County NY.

His wife, Betsey Ann, was the daughter of David and Eunice (Murray) Hempstead. David was possibly from Southold, Long Island NY.

Some references show her name as Elisa or Elsa. I have used the name shown on her gravestone - Elsia.
