I endorse the wisdom of an ancient Egyptian proverb: To speak of the dead is to make them live again.
I'm a retired Historian, photographer, and genealogist. I got my PhD in History at Ohio State in 1983. Contrary to popular belief, I am not personally responsible for the success or failure of the Ohio State athletic teams.
Since the 1970s I have moved a lot: Ohio to Virginia (Madison), back to Ohio, back to Virginia (Independent Hill), and back to Ohio again. Later, California, Indiana, Texas, and back to Virginia....Lithuania, Slovenia, Greece, Sicily, the Azores... For a while my life story could've been called 'there and back again.' (Apologies to Prof. Tolkien and his Hobbit... Thus the name 'Shiredweller.')
I taught a lot of college history courses along the way at Ohio State, Purdue, UTSA, Central Texas, Sen Antonio College, for the Baptists at Wayland Baptist U and the Catholics at St. Leo U. I assembled graphic plotters for Calcomp in California. Spent 33 years working for the USAF and the DoD at Kelly AFB, Texas, and at Fort Lee, Va. Wrote 100+ published articles and a two-volume military history.
I agree with Mark Twain: Travel is a sure cure for ignorance and prejudice. It's true, but only if you keep an open mind... and open your eyes and ears, too.
Old movies got me involved with Find A Grave, looking up locations of movie stars' last resting places. Then, realizing my relatives and friends were not represented on Find a Grave, I started building memorials for them. One thing led to another; now I have a lot of bios to write, and a lot of photos to shoot and post. A big THANK YOU to everyone who has fulfilled any of my photo requests or transferred any of my relatives' memorial pages to me!
My wife and I have established a Lithuanian Heritage Museum which includes a library & archive ... carrying on the traditions and stories, history and culture of our ancestors' homeland. Of course I'm half Slovenian, too, but while I've tried keeping a family tree, I'll let my cousins handle the creation of a museum.
