ABOUT ME: Retired and living life to the fullest. Citizen archivist for many government and educational institutions. History nerd. Born in the wrong era... aside from graving, my other interests include antiques, reading old newspapers and periodicals, collecting rare and antiquarian books, and travel. We divide our time between our homes in Europe and the US.
AM I A "COLLECTOR?" Absolutely not, and I resent the idea that all of us who manage many memorials are "collectors." FindAGrave is a volunteer organization and requires many different skill sets. Mobility issues prevent me from walking the stones like I used to, but I'm retired and I've got the time to research suggested edits and responsibly manage memorials until someone willing and better comes along. Most of the memorials are adopted from Fallen or Retired Gravers because it breaks my heart to see auto-accepted corrections. I am one of many Gravers on this site who are willing to manage memorials if you are thinking about retiring from FindaGrave. Please reach out instead of just abandoning your memorials and allowing auto-accepted corrections for more than a year before FindaGrave takes over the memorials and places them up for adoption.
WHY I'M HERE: I grew up next to a cemetery and spent many hours with the neighborhood children playing among the stones. This was the beginning of my lifelong fascination with cemeteries/graveyards and the lives of the people who rest there. Today, FindaGrave is my digital playground. I'm not a genealogist, but I'm a history buff and I love adding to the life stories of the memorials I manage.
EDITS: Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to leave flowers or suggest edits to the memorials I manage. I do validate all suggested edits because we're all human and make occasional mistakes. Can't tell you how many times I've had "spouses" born after their alleged partners have died, or similar obvious errors. It happens, and that's why I validate. So please include your source in the notes section of "Suggest Edits," it makes things easier for me to research. If your information is from personal knowledge include that. Please don't make me start from square one when you've already done the research. Thanks.
TRANSFERS: I don't "own" these memorials and I'm not related to most of them. I consider myself a responsible steward of the memorial and don't follow FindaGrave rules for transfers. I'm always happy to see my memorials passed into the hands of ACTIVE FindAGrave family or friends who care about them and can tell their stories better than I ever could. Exceptions: Unless required by FindAGrave transfer rules, I don't transfer to volunteers who state they allow suggested edits to be auto-accepted. This flies in the face of our responsibility to manage the memorials and insure the information is correct. If you manage so many memorials that you are too overwhelmed to at least LOOK at the edits for a quick sanity check, perhaps you should consider turning some of them over to FindAGrave (Member 8) so they can be adopted by people who will properly and respectfully manage them.
