WBL VFW Post 1782 Commander, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) Camp 56 (Minnesota) Researcher, Retired Army Reserve Colonel, Civil War Reenactor as Private (like my G-Grandfather from the 20th WI INF) with the 1st Minnesota Regiment.
I am also the leader of OPERATION HEADSTONE, a joint (American Legion, VFW, SUVCW, MN Dept of VA, and others) statewide project to remedy the problem of hundreds of Civil War veterans in Minnesota without a headstone. "This is a significant community service veterans project. None of us can do this statewide project alone. The heroes of our past helped pave the way for the road ahead and we must complete this project." Commander Paul Hassing, The American Legion Department of Minnesota. Multiple headstones requests are in progress in multiple counties. We have done over 200 the last 2 years and if donations support it, hope to do even more. While we can do the "hard part" of doing the research to find the documents the Veterans Affairs (VA) requires we cannot do everything alone. We need help finding veterans not buried in traditional cemeteries, to take photos to verify if a headstone is needed and to do research using genealogy techniques. While the VA provides headstones for military veterans at no cost, we need donations to pay the average setting fee in Minnesota of $250 that cemeteries understandably charge. You are invited to a Civil War Headstone Dedication ceremony at 2:00 on Sunday, September 27th, 2026 at the Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will be conducting this ceremony for over 150 Civil War veterans who have been in unmarked graves for decades.
