trying to stay ahead of developers who want to cover historical markers... and the weather, time and vandals that obscure the inscriptions... to honor those that walked before us.

My areas of interest include those that are forgotten: abandoned cemeteries, family plots, and institutional cemeteries such as poor houses/farms, medical schools, prisons, hospitals and sanatoriums. Although I visit cemeteries whenever I travel (to the dismay of others in the car), most of my work is in Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, and Washington State's Skagit and Snohomish counties. I've been known to wander off to Canada, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine given the opportunity.

Whenever possible, I post a photo--a photo makes it real. If I've added a photo to a memorial that already has one, it is for any of the following reasons: adding GPS data, documenting the current condition of the marker, adding proximity context with surrounding markers, and adding a better image. I also try to list the sources I've used to stitch together family relations or any info that I might find. If you wish to republish my photo, please ask before assuming that my work is public domain.

Although I try to thank and acknowledge all corrections, I may not always have the time. IMPORTANT: When submitting Suggested Edits, please use the "Suggest other corrections" option located toward the bottom of the memorial screen and provide a source for the edits you are requesting. I will decline edits without a source that I can validate. I do NOT have access to Ancestry and use FamilySearch for vital records validation.

I will not link to those who are listed as burial location unknown or memorials whose placement in a cemetery is supposition (aka plops).

Another thing I don't do: I don't copy data dumps from vital records (census, ss index, etc.) into bios. If you want this content published, write a narrative that puts it into prose.

Please use the virtual cemetery feature to group your family memorials. If you have information you'd like to add to a memorial, please use the "Suggest other corrections" with your updates. Should you request a transfer, explain your relationship--more than just "he/she is a member of my family." I transfer within the four-generation FindAGrave guideline; a direct relative within four generations includes your spouse, siblings, parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I'm an active member of the Vermont Old Cemetery Association and conduct preservation workshops. In a large recent project at Dartmouth Cemetery in Hanover, NH, I focused on finding/recognizing the many donors who have advanced the understanding of medicine at the Dartmouth Medical School from its earliest days and adding them to FindAGrave.
