I'm originally from the hamlet of Wostok, Alberta, Canada. Resident of Lamont County, Alberta, Canada.

Started volunteering here as I started my own family history booklet and it just escalated from there !! My families include: Prokopchuk, Onyschuk, Small, Chichak, Horobec, Cholak, Trohymchuk, Chipiuk/Czopuk, Cebryk/ Zabrick, Kowalchuk, Dey, Baynham, Ropchan and Craddock so far.

I enjoy walking through our local rural and small town cemetery's and photographing memorials to input or update info as needed as well ! Great physio to help recover from two hip replacement surgeries within the last 2 years !!

I truly feel that everyone deserves to be remembered. To create a Memorial page for someone who has passed, is just my way to show respect for that person and to honour their memory.

∼Re: Fort Saskatchewan Cemetery: I also frequent this cemetery as travel the area. I've taken the time to inquire with their office in obtaining the correct plot location for majority of each memorial in order to have consistency. Their office staff is great to work with !

∼I LOVE visiting cemetery's, taking photos of monuments, decipher inscriptions to my best ability and inputting any new memorials of loved ones at their final resting place. I thoroughly enjoy connecting family memorials to the best of what I've researched. I can read Ukrainian quite well, and if there's some spellings I'm not sure of, i utilize an app called deepl.com to help decipher !

I conduct research through many sources: Ancestry, Alberta Vital Statistics (via Provincial Archives of Alberta website), Alberta Genealogy Society, Alberta, Family members of the departed if known, Archived newspaper articles, Dictionary of Ukrainian Canadian Biography of Pioneer Settlers of Alberta 1891-1900, history textbooks; and various online cemetery databases, Historical Walking Tours, Edmonton cemeteries, St. Michael's Cemetery, or contacting the cemetery's mgmt office.

Learning as I go too ! I've learned that if a cemetery doesn't actually have a map or guide to follow, the plot location that AGS has recorded, can definitely distort abit where the burial location is, especially where there are unknown burials. Sometimes the names registered are incorrect due to another language utilized therefore need to be deciphered by going direct to the memorial to determine correct name.

I mainly work on local cemeteries within Lamont County in Alberta, as well as the Fort Saskatchewan Cemetery, St. Stephens near Edmonton and Jasper Cemetery (love Jasper!) as time permits.

My goal is also to get the GPS of each memorial at these local cemetery's, also at Fort Sask. , Saint Stephens near Edmonton, AB. , and Jasper Cemetery.

∼SUGGESTED EDITS: I thank all suggested edits, however would dearly APPRECIATE a note attached of the source of the info obtained of the memorial please and thanks ! Or add bio to the memorial to coincide with your suggestion of where obtained. Otherwise if i cannot locate source, then the edit will be declined.

Memorials

Volunteers add memorials to Find a Grave as they are passionate about helping people with discoveries regarding their ancestors, friends, and others.

A memorial can be added by any Find a Grave member with information that might come from a cemetery record, a headstone, an obituary or other record. Adding a memorial to Find a Grave records the burial site or type and memorializes the person that passed on, honoring them.

∼AS PER FIND A GRAVE SUPPORT: In genealogy, primary sources are: original records or documents created at the time of an event by someone directly involved. They provide the most direct evidence of a person's life and are crucial for building accurate family trees. Examples include vital records like birth, marriage, and death certificates, census records, military records, land deeds, probate records, and personal papers like letters, diaries, and photographs. 

Using primary sources strengthens the reliability of genealogical research, helping to avoid inaccuracies and misconceptions. These also offer direct evidence of events, reducing the chance of errors found in secondary sources. They provide specific details about individuals, families, and their lives, enriching the narrative of a family history.

∼REMINDER for SURNAMES on memorials:

Input Last Name as you would find it on the tombstone. If the interred had MORE than one last name, they may be added to the last name field. Separate each last name with a space. Our Memorial Search will search all names in the last name field. Especially important, especially if there were any surnames previous to being legally changed from! If other possible spellings, place this information in the bio. Our Memorial Search can search for similar name spellings under more search options. Do not include honorary or other suffixes in the Last Name field.

BIO in memorial: I will NOT input cause of death that's hurtful as do not want to possibly upset or disrespect anyone.

PHOTOS: I take pride in obtaining the best possible photo of a memorial (weather depending too) and it's surrounding area if needed (flat stone) and try to avoid having my own reflection in it. I see too many of other's that have their own reflection in it and it's abit disappointing of that not being recognized. If you wish to use my photo of any memorial, you may !! IF there's a photo of a memorial in place and nothing has changed, I'd prefer to not have another photo of the same memorial as it's redundant and doesn't make sense to have more of the same UNLESS it has been updated or there's info that cannot be seen. IF there's any photo I've inserted onto a memorial that you'd like removed, please don't hesitate to advise me and I'll gladly remove it !

Photos of obits: I'd prefer to NOT have them placed as a photo on the memorial (exception if persons mentioned living then are NO longer living), I'd rather have them typed into the persons Bio, redacting name of any living, along with a named source. This way IF there's a persons name within the obit that you cannot connect to, you can link (using the link icon shown by the bio in edit feature) their memorial within the Bio !

"Memorials of living spouses/relatives created from obituaries are NOT ALLOWED.

*Per Sarah-Find A Grave Administrator:

"The site does not encourage adding memorials for individuals who are still living. If you think a spouse/partner or other name listed on the stone could reasonably be alive, it's best not to create a memorial from that name.

Now, if the living person has given permission to the manager to post a living memorial and there's a pre-need stone in a cemetery, then it is okay. Yet the manager should put "Still living" in the bio. That said, if you know the person is alive and don't have permission from them, you really shouldn't be creating a memorial for that individual."
