For the last 40 years, Jodi Koste, Archivist at the Medical College of Virginia, and I have been compiling a biographical register of physicians who served the Confederacy in a medical capacity. At the present time there are over 10,100 files in the database, but because of duplications through multiple spellings of surnames and given names, I estimate there were about 9500 different individuals who served as physicians. Cemetery documentation often supplies useful biographical information about Confederate physicians and can help correct errors in the spelling of names. Find A Grave memorials have provided valuable details for the register and in turn, for those who use the register.

Should you wish to learn something about Civil War medicine from the standpoint of the physicians who treated the sick and wounded soldiers, see my virtual cemetery. It contains over 1500 biographies based mostly on the wonderful Confederate Compiled Service Records in the National Archives and Records Administration. I also searched collections of their letters and contemporary newspapers and have had great assistance from modern day archivists at medical schools that were in existence during the Civil War.
