Bio
From my own amateur research and with the kind help of several genealogists, and more seasoned researchers than myself, the following is a small glimpse of my ancestry.
I'm 14th generation American, with Puritan and Quaker forefathers dating back to the 1600s in British Colonial America.
My paternal forefathers (surnames: Bishop, Goodyear, Hubbell, Meigs, Nichols, Sanford, Stevens, and many others) immigrated from England during the 1600s and settled in New England: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
Following the American Revolutionary War, my direct Hubble and Bishop forefathers left New England and settled in the Appalachians of southwestern Virginia. Later generations of my immediate forefathers relocated to the Mid-Atlantic States, primarily Maryland.
My maternal side of the family have deep roots on the Delmarva Peninsula (Wright, Quillen, Wroten, Hickman, & Moore families to name a few).
I am a direct descendent of Ezekiah Hezechias-Elias Raughton, who left his ancestral lands in Croft, Lincolnshire, England and arrived at Jamestown, Colonial Virginia in 1619. His son William I established the Wroten-Wroughton-Roten family in Dorchester County, Maryland.
My Quillen forefathers were descendants of Teague MacQuillan of Clan MacQuillan, known as the "Lords of the Route" and occupied Dunluce Castle in County Antrim, Ulster (Northern Ireland).
Deported from London in 1635, Teague arrived at the James River settlement in Accomack, Virginia, with his wife Mary and 3 known children. It has been said that 99% of American Quillan/Quillen/Quillin's are descendants of Teague.
A seasoned genealogist once said, "Your family has been here [America] forever." I believe actor Chevy Chase was once quoted as saying "People who define themselves in terms of ancestry are like potatoes - the best parts of them are underground." I have to agree.
Bloodlines tell us where we started, not who we choose to become.
Most of the memorials that I manage are my family members. Mere birth and death dates doesn't say anything about the people themselves, and normally, obituaries proviide very limited information. I attempt to offer brief bios about my ancestors, when I can, that one won't find in any official documents, but rather firsthand accounts of the person from those who actually knew them.
I attempt to provide valuable information for future generations.
