Military ranks, added as name prefixes on memorials, are reserved for those who were killed in action or died on active duty. For all others who served, their rank will be shown in the inscription field of the memorial, if it is engraved on their headstone, and/or with a 'V" designation by the name.

Try to take photos on a sunny day, at a time when the sun hits the tombstone at an angle.

Remember most stone face East, so you should take them in the morning

Make sure the stone is readable; remove debris such as soil, leaves, grass, or twigs.

Take multiple photos. This will give you more choices when uploading photos to the site.

Photograph the entire headstone straight on so that it nearly fills the frame. If the stone is upright, you may need to kneel to get the best shot. You can photograph at different readable angles as well.

If the headstone has multiple sides with text, then photograph each side.

A shadow can help text be more pronounced, morning or evening may be best.

I will not put someone's baptismal name on their memorial if it does not match what their stone. If someone is baptized Frederich Heinrich Charles, but used Charles his whole like and has Charles on his stone, that is what name I will use.

On ancestry.com they have "U.S., Burial Registers, Military Posts and National Cemeteries, 1862-1960", don't trust the index, LOOK at the IMAGE! The last column says what happen to the body.
