Findagrave is not a genealogy family tree site for your family tree. Findagrave is to memorialize those who have passed before us. Thank you to those members who have taken the time to create a memorial for our ancestors and to those who walk cemeteries to photograph headstones. When adding a photo to a memorial choose the type of photo by marking Grave, Person, Family or Other. Photos for a memorial should relate to the person being memorialized or to their gravesite.

Grave: Photos of the headstone/marker, headstone with surrounding area, or gravesite itself. We allow for photos that help point out the specific location of the grave. For example, a photo showing more of the section and an arrow that points to the gravesite. It is helpful to add more information about the gravesite (i.e. the grave is unmarked) in the caption area attached to the photo. When a memorial has a "grave" photo, it will show up in search results filtered with "grave photo."

Person: Photos of the person being memorialized

Family: Generally photos of the person being memorialized with their family members

Other: Generally a document or record related to the person (THIS INCLUDES DEATH CERTIFICATES, OBITUARIES, NEWS RELATED ARTICLES ETC.)

I upload documents to memorials to substantiate the information within as allowed by Findagrave.

Transfers are within findagrave policy. If you don't know what the policy is, look in the Help section. State your EXACT relationship AND NAME when asking for a transfer. If your transfer request doesn't fall within the Findagrave transfer guidelines or I am related to the person, your request will be ignored. This applies to any memorial under my management. Ask NICELY and do not DEMAND, argue with me or write to support at findagrave because the memorial was not transferred to you immediately. Findagrave allows for a reasonable period of time for a transfer and I am not on this site 24 hours a day.

I do not transfer my family members, my husband's family members or my children's family members.

I do not transfer bulk name or bulk family requests. Bulk requests are reported. Repeated out-of-guideline transfer requests are ignored.

From Findagrave support regarding the transfer of REMANAGED (memorials taken over from a fallen, suspended, inactive or retired graver) memorials: If the memorial in question is a relative to you, is within our transfer guidelines, and the memorial manager is not related to the deceased, the manager is required to transfer the memorial. The manager has a reasonable period of time to transfer the memorial. After that period of time, findagrave may be contacted to make the transfer. Remember, the goal of findgrave is not to have every member of your ancestry under your management. The purpose of findgrave is to memorialize those who have passed before us.

How can I request to manage a relative's memorial?

• Determine if you really need the memorial transferred to you for management. You can add photos and suggest corrections without managing a memorial. With millions of members, there will be many overlapping family trees and it would be impossible for all members to manage their entire tree.
• Memorials are transferred for relatives with these close relationships: child, spouse/partner, sibling, parent, grandchild, great-grandchild, grandparent, great-grandparent, niece/nephew, great-niece/nephew, aunt/uncle, great-aunt/uncle, or first cousin. This would include adoptive, step and in-law versions of these relationships.

If two members are related within these guidelines and both would like to manage the memorial, the member with the closer relationship should be given management.

• Always explain your relationship in the request! Keep in mind that the memorial manager may also be related to the memorial and may not make the transfer. You may also want to include your specific interest in the memorial.

PER MILITARY PROTOCOL: I do not add military titles to the memorials. Unless the deceased died while in the military or retired after a lifetime service, military titles are not to be placed on the memorial. If you want a military title on the memorial, add it to the inscription area.

If my account name isn't under a picture on a memorial, I can't remove it. Please contact the person who uploaded it and ask them to remove the picture, or write to [email protected]. — If there are two names at the bottom of a memorial and my name is on top, that means I didn't create the memorial, and am the current manager. I can't delete the memorial. No one except findagrave can delete or merge a duplicate memorial.

In my many years of research I have uncovered important facts with cemeteries. Record keeping was poor, and many burials were not recorded, were recorded under name misspellings, were misfiled or just couldn't be found such as in St Patrick's Cemetery in Chesterton, Indiana. There are many burials in that cemetery that were never recorded and no one knows where some of the deceased were buried. Term graves were common in most of the larger cemeteries. Burial records were also lost to time such as at Old Augusta Cemetery in Pike County Indiana. If a death certificate or an obituary states a person was buried in a particular cemetery but the cemetery records claim there is no record of burial in the cemetery, that does not mean the person wasn't buried there. I no longer accept edits removing a burial from a cemetery to 'burial unknown' because cemetery records don't reflect a burial. You must have documentation proving that the deceased was buried somewhere else and then I will move the memorial.

Regarding destroyed cemeteries or reinterred graves, over time many cemeteries have been moved or destroyed, due to reservoirs being created, or land sold and the family or church cemeteries being absorbed into farmland and commercial property. REINTERMENT doesn't always mean the graves were physically moved. Graves have been left behind and only the headstones were moved to a new location. If there is record of a physical burial in the original cemetery and 100 years later the headstone was moved, but there is nothing left of the coffin etc, what is considered a cenotaph? The moved headstone. This is a gray area and always open to dispute.
