Under the NZ Veterans' Support Act 2014, a veteran is defined as a member of the armed forces who took part in qualifying service at the direction of the New Zealand Government. This includes those who died while on operational deployment or in service.

• Recognition of Service: Those who die on qualifying operational service—which includes most combat and war situations—are considered veterans.

Information On Waikumete Cemetery Scattered Ashes

The Waikumete Cemetery office have stated that the Auckland Council database incorrectly has the Eucalyptus Glade as the scattering location. Eucalyptus Glade was not opened until 2012-2014. If a scattering location was not recorded prior to this or recently unknown, a database upgrade defaulted all scatterings to the Eucalyptus Glade. There is a memorial to those who have their scattering location unrecorded by the cemetery office.

Prior to 2000 at Waikumete Cemetery, ashes were frequently scattered in designated memorial gardens, shrubbery areas, or in specific lawn sections, particularly around the Chapel of Faith in the Oaks. Many older ashes, particularly those unclaimed, were also stored in cabinets within the chapel before being moved to sealed vaults in the late 1970s.
